Frances (Fanny) Burney was the daughter of the musician and musicologist Charles Burney. Her mother died when she was ten years old (she had little rapport with her stepmother), at which time she began to write. She was persuaded to burn her youthful effusions, but she published her first novel, anonymously, in 1778: Evelina: Or, The History of a Young Lady’s Entrance into the World.
