    The "remarkable fact" is that their family tree is composed almost entirely of "single branches". In other words, couples in the family usually had just one child. When that child married, he or she also had just one child and so on. The Roderick Usher family is unusual because, even though there was only one birth, twins were born. Therefore, Roderick has a twin sister and seems to be the only member of his family to have had a sibling. This could be one clue to the amazing link Roderick and his sister Madeline share.
