I am wondering the best way to teach "The Fall of the House of Usher to regular 11th graders who I know will struggle with it.  What suggestions do you have for me?

One suggestion right off the bat is to focus on the idea that this is a horror story. Show them how the story builds up to its horrifying conclusion by using language to set the scene and provide the mood. Show them that Poe's language was like the special effects of its day, painting a picture in the reader's mind and getting it ready for the horrors to come. Perhaps ask them to write their own, updated version of the story and use the language of today or the visual cues they know from today's horror movies to update the plot.

I think by focusing on language and the idea of this as a horror story, like today's popular movies, you will be able to show them the pleasure in reading the story, and inspire them to perhaps create their own similar tale.
