Granger welcomes Montage into the community and introduces him to men and women who have memorized books so they won’t be lost to society. "'I want you to meet Jonathan Swift [i.e., a person who has memorized his writing]... and this other fellow is Charles Darwin, and this one is Schopenhauer... and Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha and Confucius and Thomas Love Peacock...' "He mentions authors of all the great classics of fiction, non-fiction, and philosophy. Each person in this community has memorized an important book so that even though the book is burned, it won’t be lost.
