The plot of the novel centers around a fireman named Guy Montag. Montag, who lives sometime in the future, does not put out fires but instead burns books. Inevitably, he becomes curious about the contents of the books he is burning, especially after he sees an old woman set herself on fire with her books rather than live without them. He has also met a young woman, named Clarisse, who geta Montag to question his own happiness and the job that he is doing. So, Montag begins to take books from homes where he is supposed to be burning the books. This, of course, puts him in opposition to his boss and makes him a threat to society. Montag must decide whether books are really the key to making him happy and, if so, how to escape detection and execution.
