Montag begins hoarding books from his work as a fire man (book burner) out of curiosity. He wonders what could be so bad about them, and when he reads them, he has a hard time understanding them. He meets an old man named Faber who tries to help him reach a better understanding of books. As Montag begins to come to the realization that humanity needs books and knowledge, he is chased by the law because of his crimes. When he finally escapes and comes across "book covers" (people who are memorizing books to preserve them), he begins to remember what he has read in the Book of Ecclesiastes, and joins them on their mission to preserve knowledge and restore books to humanity.
