The answer to your question comes later in this passage from Ghandi's interpretation of the Gita, a traditional Hindu text. Ghandi writes: "But the Gita says: No one has attained his goal without action. Even men like Janaka attained salvation through action. If even I were lazily to cease working, the world would not perish. How much more necessary then for the people at large to engage in action." The people of Montag's society took no action. A world war was erupting and all Clarisse could think about was having a new TV wall. Eventually, the society perishes in a world war and the only ones left to rebuild society are those who have taken action by leaving the city and memorizing books to be passed on to others. Ghandi also said earlier in the passage that," We thus see that to be a real devotee is to realize oneself.". Montag had "realized himself" and chosen what he wanted to be instead of mindlessly setting books on fire. Thus, he is one of the survivors who took the time to explore and find himself and then took action based on his beliefs. Posted by ms-mcgregor on Oct 29, 2008. |
