One hint that the society in the book is a consumer society is in the first chapter, when Montag and Clarisse meet. She mentions the "two hundred foot-long billboards."  Since billboards are used to advertise products or services, this is evidence that this is a consumer society.

Another hint occurs after Mildred is given a transfusion and she and Montag have a conversation about getting another wall-TV. Montag says that the cost of the TV would be one fourth of his yearly pay, but this is something Mildred clearly wants.

Are we a consumer society?  I don't think there is too much question about that.  Most economic activity in the United States is driven by consumer wants and needs.  The recent economic decrease in consumer spending clearly demonstrates how important consumerism is in our society.

It brings up a good point that paper burns at 451 Fahrenheit but that we will still be a technological society with wall-TVs and huge billboards the size of football fields.
