Life for Jane is very difficult at first. She is treated harshly, and feed poorly. Her friendship with Helen Burns is cut short due to Helen's death. Most of her poor treatment can be blamed on Mr. Brocklehurst, who has been pocketing money meant for the girls at Lowood. After Brocklhurst is caught, Jane is allowed to develop both her mental abilities and her social graces. Unlike many women of her time, she has the skills to be able to support herself. So when she is old enough, she advertises for a position as a governness. Thus, even though the experience at Lowood is very difficult at first, she owes her ability to make a living to the institution and that's why she gives them money when she is finally able.
