   Pip is reading at home--the rooms he and Herbert are renting in a house at the Temple in Garden Court. He probably has only a bedroom and a sitting room, but the narrator doesn't tell us which room he is in. There is a terrible storm, and he has decided to read until 11:00. The bells of St. Paul's strike the hour just as he is closing the book.

   The Temple is an area of London between St. Paul's Cathedral and Covent Garden. The Garden Court must be the name of the building Pip lives in. Take a look at the map of Dickens's London at the web site fidnet.com.
