Every character in this play points to some vice that humanity has with the exception of good deeds and knowledge. The Doctor is a Doctor of Theology, not of medical science. His purpose is to bring home the message that all things and people abandoned Everyman except his Good Deeds and Knowledge. This was a lesson to Everyman and should be a lesson in how to live properly to all other members of humanity...live well, know your Bible (not necessarily read it since most people were illiterate then and depended on the stained glass and the sculptures at churches to teach them the proper way live), and keep up your good deeds in order to get into Heaven.
