Naturalism
As a young man, Joyce admired the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen, so much so that he taught himself Norwegian in order to read the plays and even corresponded with the playwright in his native tongue. Ibsen is one of the founders of naturalism, also known as realism. His dramas portray realistic situations which raise questions as to the fairness of society. Social hierarchies are critiqued and taboo subjects, like venereal disease, become major themes. His drama, The Doll House, is one of the first depictions of the plight of a provincial housewife....
