    Both characters are prepared to marry girls they are involved with even though love may not be the main impetus of the relationships. Both women, Eveline and Polly, are prepared to change their lives to begin a new life with their intended, though at the end of "Eveline," Joyce leaves that up to the reader. It is clear that the men are also alike in their lack of emotion. They move through the stories destined to act as they do without an attempt to change the course of their fate or to change their relationships with the women. Both men appear to be willing to take the women out of a less than desirable situation to begin a new life.
