The prevailing images in "Eveline" are of dust (representing the passage of time and the tedious, ever-necessary repetition of housekeeping chores) and of paralysis. Eveline is stuck in her role as daughter and caretaker with no hopes of finding happiness for herself or having a life outside the confines of her small Dublin neighborhood. Even when presented with the opportunity to escape the confines of her current position, Eveline is unable to leave. It paints a bleak portrait of the lives of women and demonstrates how few choices and opportunities are available to them to change or make something more for/of themselves.
