The example the teacher gave us was a jungle to New York. She compared the tree tops to the empire state building, she compared the subway to wines in a forest, and so on..... The essay topics that we have to chose from are:

-A career as a mariage

-Dancing as Life

-White Blood Cells as an Army

-Videogame as _________ (we can create a comparison)

-Pollution as __________

-A sportsteam as ___________

-Marriage as __________

-School as a factory

From what I gather in this particular topic, you are to analyze in how many ways the items are connected or similar to one another.  The use of analogies or metaphors in writing allows us to see patterns that might not have been there and allows us to analyze things that are not so evident on first glance.  While I won't write it, I will give you some leading questions as to how the ideas presented could be similar and you will have to take it the rest of the way.

Careers and marraiges can be similar in that they both require work in order to be successful.  Let's keep going on this.  How does the concept of luck play a factor in both?  How long do both last?  What are the best parts of both and what could be the most difficult parts of both?  What satisfaction or compensation does someone receive in both?  Keep it clean and keep going along these lines.

How can dancing and life be similar?  How are both fun?  How are both work?   Does one need commitment and enthusiasm in both?  Why?

What does an army do?  What is it supposed to protect?  What do white blood cells do?  What is it supposed to protect?  What happens when both get overwhelmed by an enemy? What happens when one of them suffers loss?

For the ones that are blank, you can pick something as random as you like, so long as it links in as many ways as possible to the original and staring concept.  This brings us to school as a factory.  As a teacher myself, this one is near and dear to me.  Ask what is the purpose of a factory.  How is this similar to a school?  What defines factory life?  How is this evident in school life?    How does one get "paid" in both?

I hope this helps.

If you will access enotes "How to" topics, you can get excellent pointers on how to compare things.  For instance, while the "How to Compare Characters" is not exactly what you want, there are several tips and directions that are generalized enough on making comparisons that apply to your analogy essay.

Take a walk and ponder a topic which you think will work for you.  The walk will help you with tapping into your creative side, the side you need for generating images.  Also, talk with people.  Do you know anyone who has worked in a factory, for example?  Ask him/her how this occupation compares to his/her having been a student.  Certainly, answering to the clock is analogous, a number of people on the same task, etc.

See the sites listed below which may help you.  Good luck!
