    When Hemingway was a boy, his father arranged to have a older professional boxer give his son boxing lessons. During the first lesson, the old pro broke Heminway's nose and inflicted what turned out to be a permanent eye injury on young Hemingway. This injury kept him from being accepted into the U.S. army and is the reason he was forced to volunteer for the Italian ambulance corps. This might have been a fortunate injury for Heminway because he used his Italian experience as a basis for several short stories and the novel "A Farewell to Arms."
