The fourteen books of epigrams that were written at the rate of about one per year by Martial during a pivotal period in the history of Rome display a rare literary accomplishment: the complete mastery of a literary form by one man. From the time of his arrival in Rome at about the age of twenty-three until his return to his birthplace in Spain, Martial wrote verse epigrams on a wide variety of subjects and in many different styles.
