Ahhh....on the cusp of a new semester once again! If there is any cliche you could eliminate from your student's writing, forever and ever, amen, what would it be? My personal vendettas include: "In today's society" and "Throughout history."

How about "at this point in time." Does that mean, like, NOW????! Posted by mshurn on Jan 24, 2009. |

My teeth grit at "in my own personal opinion." Who else's opinion could it be if it's yours? And wouldn't it be personal? Such thoughtless redundancy is merely filler as I see it. I also groan at illogical generalizations that open papers such as my all-time favorite: "Since the beginning of time, man has pursued the American dream." Who knew that prehistoric man--and even early life forms--were seeking that green light on Daisy's dock? Posted by cybil on Jan 24, 2009. |

"At this point in time", courtesy of John Dean of Watergated fame is my own pet peeve also, but I also vote for ISBN number, although it is the professionals rather than the students that are guilty on that one. Again, the problem is redundancy. Posted by hawnsmith on Jan 24, 2009. |

In reply to #4: Redundancies always remind me of Frank Burns on MASH: "I myself personally . . . " Wonderful line for Frank! Whoever wrote it must have graded a few English papers along the way. Posted by mshurn on Jan 25, 2009. |

My dreaded five: 1) In today's society 2)these days 3)in my opinion or I think or I feel 4) time and time again 5) absolutely positively (and some even add 'undeniably') Posted by dalepowell1962 on Jun 4, 2009. |
