All freshman are required to live on campus, according to Emory Housing guidelines. The one instance where a student may live off campus is if their permanent home qualifies them as a nearby resident, in which case, they would commute back and forth. Commuting as a freshman, however, is something that should be highly avoided because those who do commute tend not to acclimate to the campus environment as easily than those who live on campus. Roommates are also assigned after taking a survey. Freshman can choose to live in a single dorm, though these are limited throughout the dorms. For the most part, roommates do get along well, but if severe problems arise, Emory offers a “couple’s counseling”, a session that the roommates must go through if they decide to depart from living with each other.
