Emily Dickinson did not have a very illustrious life but rather led the life of a recluse instead. She lived vicarously through her poetry, preferring the ideal to humdrum reality. It is said that even when friends paid her a visit at her father's house, she would often refuse to come downstairs to see them in order to simply "contemplate" upon their presence by overhearing their conversation below.

Emily Dickinson was born in 1830 in Amherst, MA. Her dad was a lawyer and the treasurer for Amherst College.
Emily remained single all her life and never left the family home. When she was 45, her mom became paralyzed and Emily and her sister cared for her until she died seven years later.
As far as education, Emily graduated from high school and went to college for a while, but didn't graduate.
It is believed that she started writing poetry while she was in her early twenties. However, only 7 of her poems were ever published during her life.
She died in 1886 from something called Bright's Disease which is a pretty nasty sounding kidney ailment.

Emily attended Amherst academy and then later attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary fo about a year. She then returned to her father's home, leading a recluse life. Emily never married, she was very attached to her family and had a few close friends. She kept her relationships though writing. One of her closest friends was Thomas Wentworth Higgins who eventually published her poems. At Emily's death in 1886, 1775 poems she had written survived. At the time only 7 poems had been published. It was not until 1955 that Emily's entire body of work reached print.
