What are the political and social leanings of most students and faculty? Is it easy to express opposing views?

Most professors I had welcomed opposing views and were very open to different opinions and possibilities.  However, I did have friends that said they had professors that became extremely agitated after taking an opposing view.  

These days it seems as though you are going to find these types of situations at every school, some more than others.  I know from experience I found this to be a smaller problem at Elon.  I never felt threatened or different if I did not agree with the majority of the class or the professor.  My classes always seemed to welcome discussion and opposing views.
