Henry Gamadge, an author and consultant on old books, manuscripts, autographs, and inks, lives in the fashionable Murray Hill district of New York. Young and unmarried when he first appears, Gamadge marries in the course of the series and has a son. Because of his reputation as a writer on the subjects of literary and criminal detection, Gamadge is frequently called upon to solve mysteries which have baffled professional investigators.
