    The story takes place in the summer, through the fall, and into the winter. It begins in the summer, when April comes to live with her grandmother and befriends Melanie. As time goes on, she starts at her new school with Melanie and eventually they befriend Elizabeth when she moves into the apartment building. They even accept the two older boys into their group. Then, during Halloween, the children use the group trick or treating as an excuse to stop by Egypt. When the holidays roll around, the children are so busy that they can't sneak out to Egypt, but soon after they want to return.
