Moccasins are comfortable, practical "shoes" (more like slippers) worn by the American Indians.  They were made of animal skin and were very practical for the Indians to wear.  They were sometimes made as shoes and sometimes were made longer, like boots (with rawhide laces).  They were sometimes decorated with beautiful beads and other decorative adornments.  If you've never worn a pair, they are super comfortable!  They are still made and you can purchase them in some areas of the country and probably online.

In The Education of Little Tree, moccasins allowed the wearer to feel the earth beneath him and thus to be in-tune with nature.
