All of these are supposedly Cherokee words for things that are actually just words that Earl "Forrest" Carter made up, in this novel that masquerades as an autobiography.
Since the publication of this book, it has come to be known that Carter was actually a former KKK member and white supremacist who may not have had any Indian blood at all.
At any rate, according to the book, the words you mention are supposed to have the following meanings:...

Moccasins are comfortable, practical "shoes" (more like slippers) worn by the American Indians. They were made of animal skin and were very practical for the Indians to wear. They were sometimes made as shoes and sometimes were made longer, like boots (with rawhide laces). They were sometimes decorated with beautiful beads and other decorative adornments. If you've never worn a pair, they are super comfortable! They are...

The Cherokee Way is to live in harmony with nature and within one's self. It is expressed beautifully in the poetic excerpt between Chapters 2 and 3 - "Learn the wisdom of Mon-o-lah (the earth), and then you'll know The Way and touch the soul of all the Cherokee". In Chapter 2, Little Tree goes with Granpa on the high trail, and gets to see and appreciate the land on which they live. They watch the rising sun give life to the...

I think the author's method of structuring the story is especially effective for two reasons.First of all, by using short scenes instead of a tight plot, he allows the reader to experience the material rather than just read it, providing the opportunity for greater involvement in what is happening. The short scenes also better enable him to define and communicate the points he feels are important.Secondly, the story is told from the point...

Well, there aren't excerpts at the start of each chapter. There is a song or chant quoted between the second and third chapter. That one links the story to older traditions (Cherokee), and sets the tone. Other chapters start with references to the key themes contained in them, or quote sections of key dialogue as their titles. Those give the theme or topic of the chapter, much like any title. Most chapters, though, don't start with excerpts.
