value added
value addedThe total sales of a firm minus purchases of inputs from other firms. What is left is available for the wages of its employees and the profits of its owners. National income is the sum of value added in all enterprises in the economy. Trying to calculate national income by adding the outputs of all firms would involve massive double counting.
