savings and loan association
savings and loan association (S&L)A US institution borrowing from the general public to provide housing finance. S&Ls are the nearest US equivalent to the UK's building societies. During recent years S&Ls have encountered major financial problems through financing fixed-interest mortgages with short-term deposits, whose cost responds rapidly to changes in market interest rates.
