ECU Slang

Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to ECU. The more of these words you know, the better off you'll be.

1 Card

A multi-functional ID/debit card for decliningbalance accounts such as dining, health services, and copying

College Hill

Often abbreviated as “the Hill,” College Hill is the dorm neighborhood on College Hill Drive, which starts near Fletcher Recital Hall and Brewster and winds over to 14th Street towards the stadium.

The Mall

The Mall is the green area on Central Campus between Joyner Library and Wright Auditorium, which is home to some of the last stately trees on campus, large numbers of squirrels, and a pair of hawks who have sometimes preyed on the squirrels.

Mendenhall

The Student Center is named for Cynthia Mendenhall, former director of the Student Union; it's not “Menden Hall.”

NSO

Neighborhood Service Offices are located in each dorm neighborhood. Students can rent vacuum cleaners and borrow keys if they lock themselves out of their rooms.

Banner

Banner is a Web site for accessing all manner of academic information, online discussion forums, campus directories, class rosters, tuition statements, local weather, and news headlines from the East Carolinian.

Pirate Bucks

Pirate Bucks is the name for the account that works like a tax-free debit card for students to buy food on campus.

Tailgaters

Not referring to sports fans; tailgaters are non-residents or non-students who sneak into dorms behind residents.

West Campus

The name for the medical school campus across town near the hospital

West Neighborhood

Dorm neighborhood near the Rec Center and West End Dining Hall
