Drexel Slang
Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to Drexel. The more of these words you know, the better off you’ll be. There aren’t that many.
BMES – Biomedical Engineering & Science
Cav’s – Cavanaugh’s Restaurant & Bar
CAT – Center for Automation Technology
CHEME – Chemical Engineering
Co-op – A period of six months during which Drexel students go out into the world and get real, paying jobs as part of their studies.
The DAC – The Daskalakis Athletic Center (the gym)
The Drexel Shaft – The shaft that each student supposedly receives from every administrative office during their Drexel career. The Drexel Shaft is also a smokestack structure on the rail yard next to campus. According to University legend, the structure grows one more inch every time a student is shafted.
Mario the Magnificent – A beautiful and tasteful statue of a dragon at 33rd & Market Streets named for a Drexel alumnus and trustee.
The Quad – An open slab of concrete, which some of the main buildings border. Activities are usually held here.
Sev – The 7-Eleven located on 34th Street
Taco lou’s – The essential late-night lunch truck.
Van R – Van Rensselaer Hall
