One of the first elements to analyze would be how the protagonist responds to the setting. Identify and note the emotions they hold towards the setting and how the background is a part or component of the character's identity. Some questions might help in this process: Is the setting a source of strength or weakness for the character? How loyal is the main character towards the setting? Being able to discern the impact of the setting on the character in terms of how they read and understand elements will be critical in identifying how the main character and their moods are directly influenced by the setting of the work.
