Van Helsing thinks that the vampire Lucy is responsible for a group of children who went missing and were subsequently returned with strange marks on their necks.

Van Helsing also believes that Lucy invited Dracula into her room and allowed him to bite her.  A vampire, the story suggests cannot enter uninvited, therefore, Lucy must have been a wayward girl to allow Dracula access to her room.  She is not a proper Victorian young woman and violates the rules of modesty and purity.
