Enfield describes to his friend a scene in which Hyde trampled a little girl who ran into him underfoot, and who then offered her family "hush money" to not file a complaint to the police. Hyde dismissed himself for a moment through that very door, then reappeared with a cheque in hand, signed by Dr. Jekyll, as compensation for the little girl's injuries.

When Utterson returns home, he muses over the fact that Dr. Jekyll has left a will in the name of his "friend and benefactor Edward Hyde." ; moreover, the letter stipulates that if he should not show up over a given period of time, his personal belongings should be turned over for safekeeping to Hyde, who is to have power of attourney over all his affairs. Utterson obviously can't understand the connection between the two men, so opposite in character and demeanor. "Something strange in the neighbourhood" is evidently going on; Utterson is intrigued, but he cannot get to the heart of the matter.
