Huff is the governing consciousness of the novel. All events are seen through his eyes, and the only opinions and judgments rendered are his. He is not in this sense a reliable narrator, for his description of each incident is tainted by his own prejudices. Like all the characters in Double Indemnity, Huff is motivated by self-aggrandizement, trying to outsmart everyone else.
