Irish poet, novelist, and playwright Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, the son of Sir William Wilde, a distinguished doctor, and Jane Francesca Elgee, a poet and journalist. Wilde attended the Portora Royal School at Enniskillen, where he excelled at classics. In 1871, he was awarded the Royal School Scholarship to attend Trinity College in Dublin. He excelled there also, winning the college’s Berkeley Gold Medal for Greek and being awarded a Demyship scholarship to Magdalen College in Oxford.
