The Story:
Mr. Dombey was a stiff, dignified man who rarely showed emotion, but the birth of an infant son, who was named Paul, was cause for rejoicing. Mr. Dombey had longed many years for a child who would become the Son of his mercantile firm of Dombey and Son. The fact that Mrs. Dombey died shortly after the boy’s birth did not particularly concern him; his attention centered entirely on the little infant. Mr. Dombey also had a daughter, Florence, but she meant nothing to him, for she could not take a place in the firm.
