   The now generally accepted translation of the title is not A Doll’s House but A Doll House. A doll house refers to a child’s miniature model of a home and all its inhabitants – Nora, Torvald, the children, the servants -- are prettified miniatures of human beings. The home and the marriage are fanciful and unrealistic.

   To employ the title with the apostrophe (A Doll’s House) would imply that Nora is the owner and the reason for the falseness of the ménage. This notion is contrary to fact. It is Torvald’s house, and when Nora walks out on husband and children, no transfer of ownership is required or desired.

    

   Before Nora's heroic self-assertion, Torvald and the children are as unrealistic and doll-like as is Nora.
