Universal Novel Assignment

Posted by emeraldjde on October 10, 2010

This is a novel assignment I created to go along with my students' outside reading. In an effort to get them to read for enjoyment, I allow them to choose one book a semester that they have the entire semester to complete. Their only requirement is to complete this handout. While there are wonderful projects and essays out there, that's not the point of this. It's designed to allow students a basic way to show me they've read by giving me the plot, setting, theme, characters, etc. I find that for outside reading with reluctant (or downright resistant) standard English teenagers, this is a way to encourage them to read for enjoyment. If they know they can change books as many times as they like until they've got one they enjoy and that they don't have to come up with some elaborate demonstration of their knowledge, they're more apt to complete the assignment. Students are not allowed to choose a novel available on SparkNotes without special permission from me. I use this with high schoolers, but I know that it could easily be modified to work with younger students as well.
