Sideways Stories From Wayside School eNotes Lesson Plan
Excerpt From this Document
Sideways Stories from Wayside School recounts the wacky adventures of a class on the top floor of an improbably tall school. In the first story, mean Mrs. Gorf plays an unfortunate trick on herself. In the second, friendly but batty Mrs. Jewls takes over as the classroom teacher. One student, Maurecia, stores ice cream in her desk, and another, Leslie, wants to earn extra money by selling her toes. Terrence is a bad sport, John can only read upside down, and Nancy doesn’t like his name. The book’s thirty stories portray school life with an absurd sense of humor that evokes delight and invites classroom discussion.
Author Louis Sachar wrote Sideways Stories in 1978. While attending college, Sachar earned class credits by serving as a playground aide at an elementary school in California. Inspired by the students he met, he wrote Sideways Stories in their honor and followed it up with four more collections about Wayside School. Sachar has written several other children’s books as well, including the novel Holes, which won a Newbery Medal in 1999.
