  • Who arrives at Ingolstadt the morning after the creature came to life? Henry Clerval, who has come to study at the university after all
  • What is Henry forced to do immediately after his arrival? He has to take care of Victor, who falls into a nervous fever for several months.
  • From whom does Victor receive a letter after his long illness? Elizabeth

Shelley doesn’t describe the scientific process by which the creature was brought to life. Rather, she focuses on Victor’s and the creature’s emotional response to each other, revulsion for the former, and curiosity for the latter.
  • Why might Shelley have used a prolonged illness, in a sense, to separate Victor from the creature? She wanted Victor to get some perspective on it and recover, so that when the creature reappears, it was start the horror fresh. Also, she wanted the creature to develop apart from Victor, to make him more independent from his creator.
  • Why does Shelley bring Henry and Elizabeth back into the story? Shelley wanted to reintroduce friendship to Victor’s life. He has been isolated from everyone, and she needs to bring the story back around to relationships among living human beings, to later portray the creature as a person whom Victor must respond to.
