Macbeth Exercise: The Witches' Chant
Excerpt From this Document
Exercise: Witches’ Chant
*Teacher: Bring a bright flashlight or lantern to class.
- Divide your class into three groups: Witch Group 1, Witch Group 2, Witch Group 3. Send them to three corners of the room. Place a desk or several chairs (the “cauldron”) in the center of the room, clearing the other desks or chairs to the sides so that there is plenty of room to walk around the desk. Place the flashlight or lantern in the center of the “cauldron.”
- Allow the groups several minutes to practice saying their lines together as a group. On your cue, the three groups should approach the center of the room. Once gathered, each group should say their respective lines in unison. Turn off the lights. Repeat the lines.
- Do it one more time. You may want to flash the lights on and off this time. For additional “atmosphere” you may want to bring an aluminum pan and a metal spoon for some thunder effects.
- Discussion Question: How did getting up and moving around change the feeling of the lines for you?
