Hoot eNotes Lesson Plan
Excerpt From this Document
In Carl Hiaasen’s book Hoot, new kid in town Roy Eberhardt faces challenges familiar to just about anyone who has ever moved to a new school: sitting alone at lunch, longing for his former home, and being strangled by the school bully. As fate would have it, however, if bully Dana Matherson had not mashed Roy’s face against the school bus window on the day the story begins, Roy might never have glimpsed a mysterious boy dashing barefoot through the neighborhood and into the snake- and alligator-infested wilds beyond. Determined to discover the boy’s story, Roy takes his first steps on an adventure that will bring him toe-to-toe with a powerful national corporation determined to open a new restaurant in town, regardless of the environmental impact on a very rare breed of owl.
Along the way, Roy befriends the tough-talking, hard-hitting Beatrice and matches wits with the ambitious Officer Delinko and the bumbling construction-site foreman Curly. Officer Delinko and Curly are both out to discover who is vandalizing the construction site at night to prevent the restaurant’s opening. Roy eventually meets the mischievous culprit, who has made it his mission to protect the defenseless owls from the indifferent developers. While environmentalism and activism are two of the book’s major themes, Hiaasen stresses the importance of being courageous and loyal, taking risks, standing up for what’s right, and learning to strike a delicate balance between trusting your head and following your heart. Carl Hiaasen has authored a number of books for both adults and teens. Hoot, his first book for young readers, is a Newbery Honor book.
