The Story:
Horace Jewdwine, a literary editor, thought he had discovered a genius in Savage Keith Rickman, a young and unknown poet who earned his living by making catalogs for his father, a bookseller. Jewdwine hesitated, however, to declare openly that Rickman was a genius, for his reputation could suffer if the young man then proved otherwise. He encouraged Rickman privately but failed to give him the public recognition that would have meant so much to the young writer.
