Disgrace | Characters

The interplay of characters is of great importance to this novel. The narrative's binaries become clear as the various characters react. David Lurie, at the center, is a self-centered, man at midlife, who believes he has gotten to a place of comfort and intelligence. As a self-professed ladies man, his relationships with women belie a kind of ineptitude in actually dealing with women in an effective and healthy way. He forces his relationship with Melanie into existence, and Melanie's final move, pressing charges, could be seen as a reaction to Lurie's cold refusal to be lenient on...
