Because Anne felt that since her diary was going to be her new best friend, she didn't feel that calling it "dear diary" was personal enough, so she decided on the name of "Kitty." The name Kitty was not symbolic of anyone in particular in Anne's life. She simply wanted it to have its own name so that it would seem like a real person to her and like a "secret confidante" to whom she could express her deepest feelings about just about anything. The reader soon discovers just how important it is for Anne to have a "secret confidante" to whom she is able to turn to as the circumstances around her change.
