I would probably go a bit global on this, but also stress that it is difficult to judge anyone "as heroic" if we are not placed in those situations. It would be great to say that the real heroes were the ones who resisted the oppression of the Nazis and established their own sense of self regardless of the circumstances. Yet, many who were in the camps did what needed to be done to survive. While it might not fit in the traditional conception of "heroic," I would say that mere survival is sufficient grounds for heroism in such horrific circumstances.
