Devil in a Blue Dress has a large cast, but it is Easy (Ezekiel) Rawlins from whose perspective the story unfolds. Easy was orphaned at an early age, and migrated later to California from the economically depressed, violent Fifth Ward of Houston. He is unmarried, a resident of Watts, and owner of a small house and yard. Ownership represents the equal rights in American society he feels entitled to. "I felt that I was just as good as any white man, but if I didn't even own my front door then people would look at me like just another poor beggar, with his hand outstretched."
