Posted by scarletpimpernel on Monday November 9, 2009 at 3:10 PMWhen Desiree notices that Armand is treating her coldly (much differently from his original passionate treatment of her before the baby was born), she asks her mother for a motive for her husband's dramatic change. Her mother immediately suggests that Desiree just come home and hints that Desiree might be the cause of her baby's appearing to be not fully white. After all, Desiree's adoptive parents asked Armand if he wanted to investigate Desiree's mysterious background before he married her; so now her mother fears that Desiree must have been a mulatto baby.
Desiree asks her husband to contradict her mother's letter. She points out the whiteness of her skin, her hair color, etc., but Armand will have none of it. He cruelly lets her and the baby leave only to discover that Desiree was right all along and that he is the one who is of multi-racial decent.
