Katherine (Kate) O'Flaherty Chopin was born to Thomas O'Flaherty and Eliza Feris on February 8, 1851, in St. Louis, Missouri. As a writer, she became known for creating realistic portraits of life among various ethnic groups living in Louisiana. After receiving her degree from the St. Louis Academy of the Sacred Heart in 1868, she married a cotton factory owner, Oscar Chopin, had six children, and moved with her family to the village of Natchitoches Parish in Cloutierville, Louisiana. Natchitoches Parish, as well as New Orleans, became the setting for many of her stories.
