Writing is a process, and understanding the work that is involved in the process is one of the hardest steps of writing. In order to write well and to learn to improve your writing ability, you must work through each step of the process. The first step of the process is freewriting. After choosing a topic, write freely about that topic with as few restrictions on yourself as possible. Brainstorming, outlining, mapping and webbing can also be a part of the freewriting step. The second step of the writing process is drafting. Rvision is an integral part of good writing, and the first draft will need to be reworked again and again. The first part of drafting is working on getting the ideas down on paper and organizing the ideas in a logical way. Choosing and writing toward a specific audience is also an important part of the drafting step. Once the ideas are down on paper, the rewriting and revising process can begin. Peer critiques and editing are also an important aspect of writing. Have others read and critique your paper, and talk through your paper with them and critique your own writing. Some books that may be helpful to you in improving your writing are as follows: Writing a Research Paper by Phyllis Goldenberg, Writing About Literature by Edgar V. Roberts, and The Decisive Writer by Kathryn Rosser Raign. Posted by lequam on Apr 8, 2008. |
