Willy could have had a stroke of luck and fulfilled his dreams, but that turn of events would have "spoiled" the story!  The whole point is to show the hypocritical fallacies of a pumped up American culture leading people on with a false optimism instead of instructing them how to deal with their problems in a more realistic and logical way.

In light of the current economic crunch, particularly in the United States, the story of Willy rings only too true. Willy is an everyman type locked up in a closed system where his daydreaming of "luck and pluck" leads to his worst nightmare. The mind-frame of positivism (expressed by such works as Horatio Alger's Match Boy stories and Norman Vincent Peale's 'The Power of Positive Thinking') is 'has been.' Willy Loman's 'no way out' dead end existence and death reveal the incompatibility of "the American dream' and hard reality.
